Belgian Championships 2021

From Friday to Sunday, 25 to 27 June, the Belgian Sheep Federation organised the Belgian Championships 2021 in Balen.

The competition included 2 qualifying days and a final with double outrun on Sunday for the 15 competitors. The competition included 2 days of qualification and a final with double outrun on Sunday for the 15 finalists. Dirk Vansant from Geel was chosen as the supplier of the sheep and, as in the past two years, he supplied and set up the sheep. His flock of Laeken sheep supplemented by Kerry Hill crosses guarantee a fair selection of handler and dog. Dirk's flock, grazing within walking distance of a beautiful field located at the malou, Antverpialaan, granted by stud farm le Berghoeve, was again in top form.

. A beautiful symbiosis between the grazing project and providing a competition, an excellent location and the know-how of the federation.

Despite the difficult circumstances in Covid, the FSB opted, as in France and the UK, for a national championship in which all drivers could participate. The entry fee was sufficiently balanced to make adventurers and sceptics think twice and for others to go all out.

Similarly, those who were unlucky enough to qualify due to Covid through the usual Class 1 and 2 route can choose to enter. Under the guidance of co-chair Nathalie Thixon, the competition was run at a high level with all the necessary ingredients. On Friday, French team member Guillaume Josien judged and on Saturday, German team member Stefan Lahm.

They judged the final together on Sunday. On Sunday they handled the final with separate editors and a timekeeper.

The field was mowed for a large part (1/3). Inexperienced dogs or those working only on command were quickly dismissed due to these circumstances. Excuses for those who failed to qualify for the final were quickly found but never relevant. The outing was not decisive, the shedding and penning with these sensitive sheep was all the more so.

. Handlers who didn't have enough rest in themselves or their dogs, or who didn't have enough sheep experience, had little chance despite the moderate overall standard.

Of course, the Facebook handlers couldn't qualify either.

Soon it became apparent that the same names again had a chance to win the Belgian championship or to participate in the final. On Sunday, a hot to very hot day was predicted with temperatures of up to 27 degrees. The Kempen region is always a bit warmer...

. After the briefing and the reconnaissance of the terrain, the race could follow its course. Hilde de Waerhert, again selected, just like for the World team, would take the start of the race.

Unfortunately, Hilde was not present at the meeting and therefore could not defend her chances. The next rider was Els Lyphout with Leffe. Despite a reasonable start, Els could not finish the race. A wrong command at the beginning of the double ride was fatal for the rest of the selection.

Next up was Nick Couwelier with Bet. Nic's two outruns were unfortunately not enough for qualification despite a good ride with the 18 sheep. No shedding and no pen. Old Jef Vanlaer with Pam got off to a good start but a cross in the 2nd outrun and lack of finalisation also ruined his chances.

Kevin Willems and Bob followed. With a decent 1st outrun, a lift fetch but an unorthodox 2nd outrun and no finalisation also ruined his chances of being selected. After these runs, it became clear that with 2 good outruns and solid training, a place in the team was possible.

Due to the frequency of the runs, it was decided to do an extra run in the morning. Francis Krauth with Obiwan defended his chances to the max with 2 decent, but far from perfect outruns, with a satisfactory drive but no shed and pen he landed with 180 .

. Co-chair Nathalie de Thixon saw her training work rewarded with 2 nice outruns and a very solid drive. Again no finish but enough for a place in the 2021 team.

Françoise Engels, a beginner at the highest level, did not live up to expectations either. Competition experience only comes with age. This combination is promising for the future. Rudy Collin and Tom unfortunately did not live up to expectations this year. The cross-country in the first outing was fatal for the selection.

In the afternoon it was the turn of the familiar names of the last years. Eliane Verboven with Vita did very well until the shedding. At no time was Vita present enough to separate the sheep and keep them apart. With experience, Eliane played the time to earn a place in the team.

Marcel Peeters with Taff used the same tactic, which allowed him to get a place with his young dog. A great performance indeed.

Next up was Chris Caerts with Glen. Glen (Mc Allistair Spot x Mr Gallagher Hope) is probably the most underrated dog on the circuit.

Glen, only 4 years old, is not very spectacular but extremely efficient.

With 295 points out of 320 but with 2 times a fetch where Chris could have been sharper to keep the fetch tilt, there was little room for improvement. Chris and Glen's pen was off the charts with only 2 and 3 points lost per judge. The pen was as good as it was clean.

Jo de Meyst with llangwm mirk had a creditable run. In the shedding there were 5 sheep with a band instead of the expected 4, which did not help the race in terms of attractiveness. Despite a rather sloppy shedding, he was almost able to complete the pen. A time during the pen prevented a better ranking.

Eliane Verboven with the experienced May Ellis had a great run with also a finished shedding and pen. 279 points gave her a 2nd place. Let's hope that the dog's health condition will not be an obstacle to her continued performance.

Finally Marcel Peeters with Glen had the chance to draw the main prize. The race started dry but the storms of the Kempen are always a bit more brutal. In extreme weather conditions Marcel couldn't finish the event either, but a good performance in the field earned him a place in the team. With a fit team captain and other team members with sufficient experience, we can only hope for a good performance from Belgium at the European Championships in the Netherlands. The federation will provide appropriate clothing and financial support to the participants.

Belgische Kampioenschappen 2021

Van vrijdag tot zondag 25 - 27 juni organiseerde de Federatie Schapendrijven België in Balen het Belgisch Kampioenschap schapendrijven 2021.

De wedstrijd verliep over 2 kwalificatiedagen en een finale met dubbele outrun op zondag voor de 15 finalisten.

Gekozen werd, zoals 2 jaar geleden voor schapenleverancier en vaste opzetter van de schapen Dirk Vansant uit Geel.

Zijn kudde Lakense schapen aangevuld met Kerry Hill kruisingen garanderen een eerlijke selectie van handler en hond.

De kudde van Dirk die een begrazing uitvoert, op wandelafstand van een prachtig veld gelegen op de malou, Antverpialaan, aan de Federatie verleent door stoeterij de Berghoeve, was wederom in topconditie.

Een mooie symbiose van leverancier- begrazingsproject, uitstekende lokatie en know-how van de federatie.

Ondanks de moeilijke Covid omstandigheden werd door de FSB gekozen, zoals ook in Frankrijk en UK , voor een nationaal kampioenschap waar elke handler kon deelnemen. De inschrijvingsprijs was evenwichtig genoeg om avonturiers en twijfelaars 2 keer te laten denken en anderen vol voor deelname te laten gaan.

Ook zij die door Covid geen kans hadden om zich te kwalificeren via de gebruikelijke klasse 1 - en 2 weg konden opteren om deel te nemen.

Onder leiding van co-voorzitter Nathalie Thixon werd het een topwedstrijd met alle noodzakelijke ingrediënten. Vrijdag jureerde Frans teamlid Guillaume Josien en zaterdag Duits teamlid Stefan Lahm.

Zondag namen ze samen de finale voor hun rekening met aparte schrijvers en 1 timekeeper.

Het veld was voor een groot 1/3 deel gemaaid. Onervaren honden of honden enkel werkend op commando werden al snel weggeselecteerd door deze omstandigheden. Excuses voor zij die zich niet konden kwalificeren voor de finale waren snel gevonden maar nooit relevant. De outrun was niet beslissend, de shedding en pen met deze gevoelige schapen des te meer.

Handlers met te weinig rust bij zichzelf of hond, of te weinig schapenervaring, hadden weinig kans ondanks het matige algemene niveau.

Ook Facebook handlers konden zich vanzelfsprekend niet kwalificeren.

Vrij snel werd opnieuw duidelijk dat dezelfde namen weer eens kans maakten op de Belgische titel of een plaats in de finale.

Op zondag werd er een warme tot zeer hete dag aangekondigd met temperaturen tot 27 graden. De Kempen zijn altijd iets warmer...

Na de briefing en terreinverkenning kon de wedstrijd zijn beloop kennen. Hilde de Waerhert, opnieuw geselecteerd, net als voor het team WK, zou de spits afbijten.

Helaas bleek Hilde niet op de afspraak aanwezig te zijn waardoor ze haar kansen niet kon verdedigen. De volgende op de afspaak was Els Lyphout met Leffe. Ondanks een redelijke start, kon Els de wedstrijd niet beëindigen.

Het foutieve commando bij de start van de dubbele outrun was fataal voor verdere selectie.

Volgende in de rij was Nick Couwelier met Bet. Beide outruns van Nic waren helaas ook niet goed genoeg voor kwalificatie ondanks een goede drive met de 18 schapen. Geen shedding en pen.

Ancien Jef Vanlaer met Pam had een prima start maar een cross in de 2de outrun en geen finish fnuikte ook zijn kansen.

Kevin Willems met Bob volgde. Met een degelijke 1ste outrun, lift fetch maar met een onorthodoxe 2de outrun en geen finish werden ook zijn kansen voor selectie miniem.

Na deze runs werd het duidelijk dat met 2 goede outruns en degelijke drive een plaats in het team tot de mogelijkheden behoorde.

Gezien het vlotte verloop van runs werd gekozen om een extra run in de voormiddag te lopen. Francis Krauth met Obiwan verdedigde zijn kansen maximaal met 2 degelijke, maar verre van perfecte outruns, met een drive naar behoren maar zonder shed en pen landde hij op 180 punten.

Co presidente Nathalie de Thixon zag haar noeste trainingsarbeid beloont met 2 mooie outruns en zeer degelijke drive. Wederom geen finish maar voldoende voor een plaatsing in het team 2021.

Ook Francoise Engels, debutante op het hoogste niveau, kon de verwachtingen niet helemaal inlossen. Wedstrijd ervaring komt enkel met de jaren. De combinatie heeft de toekomst.

Rudy Collin met Tom kon dit jaar helaas de verwachtingen niet waarmaken. Cross in de 1ste outrun was fataal voor selectie

. Namiddag was het aan de beurt aan de bekende namen van de laatste jaren.

Eliane Verboven met Vita deed het zeer aardig tot aan de shedding. Op geen enkel moment echter was Vita aanwezig genoeg om de schapen uit elkaar te krijgen en vooral te houden. Met ervaring speelde Eliane de tijd uit om zo een plaats in het team te veroveren.

Marcel Peeters met Taff hanteerde dezelfde tactiek hetgeen ook hem een plaats opleverde met zijn jonge hond. Voorwaar een mooie prestatie.

Volgende in de rij was Chris Caerts met Glen. Glen (Mc Allistair Spot x M. Gallagher Hope) is waarschijnlijk de meest onderschatte hond in het circuit. Net 4-jarige Glen is niet erg spectaculair maar uitermate efficiënt.

Met 295 punten op 320 maar met 2 maal een fetch waar Chris scherper had kunnen de schuinte van de fetch bewaren, was er nog weinig ruimte voor verbetering. De shed van Chris en Glen was uit het boekje met slechts 2 en 3 - verlies punten per jury. Ook de pen was zo goed als clean.

Jo de Meyst met llangwm mirk had een verdienstelijke run. In de shed bleken er 5 schapen i.p.v. de voorziene 4 een bandje te hebben wat de run qua aantrekkelijkheid verder ook niet ten goede kwam. Ondanks een eerder slordige shed kon hij bijna pennen. Time voor de pen verhinderde een betere ranking.

Eliane Verboven met ervaren May Ellis liep op ervaring een mooi parcours met ook afgewerkte pen en shed. 279 punten leverden een 2de plaats op. Hopelijk is de gezondheidsconditie van de hond geen rem op verdere prestaties.

Tot slot had Marcel Peeters met Glen nog de kans om de hoofdgaai af te schieten. De run startte droog maar de kempense onweders zijn ook altijd iets brutaler. Onder extreme weersomstandigheden kon ook Marcel niet finishen maar een goede prestatie op het terrein leverde ook hem een plaats in het team op.

Met een teamcaptain in vorm en andere teamleden met ervaring op de teller kunnen we enkel hopen op de goede prestatie van Belgie op het EK in Nederland.

De Federatie schapendrijven zal voorzien in aangepaste kledij en financiele ondersteuning voor de deelnemers.
